Root Canal Treatment

When is a root canal treatment needed?

If a cavity remains untreated it may progress to an infection of the blood and nerve supply of the tooth. This will be extremely painful and cannot be treated by a normal filling. The only way to save the tooth is through a root canal treatment.

A typical root canal treatment involves:

  • Gaining access to the interior of the tooth/root
  • Removing the decayed/infected tissue with specialized instruments
  • Once cleaned, it is filled with an inert filling material to seal off the canals and prevent further infection
  • To minimize the chance of fracture of the weakened tooth, it is recommended that a crown be placed over it as soon as possible

Depending on the complexity of the procedure, this may take 1 to 2 sessions.
